Publishers are losing search referrals unevenly, gaining almost nothing from AI chatbots, and still getting most of their pageviews from their own site. That is the picture in Chartbeat, Pew Research, and Reuters Institute data from late 2025 and 2026. This page lays out those numbers, quotes what Google says about AI features and helpful content, and describes an evergreen program in which Aranx drafts and publishes explainers while the newsroom keeps standards, bylines, and the news.
Is this page for you?
A good fit when
- You publish on a site with a section that could carry evergreen explainers
- An editor can review drafts against your standards
- Your CMS accepts posts through an API or is WordPress
Not the right tool when
- You want Top Stories or Discover placement promised
- You publish breaking news only, with no evergreen section
- Your standards forbid AI-assisted drafting under any disclosure

Your own site is your biggest traffic source
Chartbeat, which tracks reader behavior across thousands of media sites, reported in November 2025 that 42% of global publisher pageviews come from internal recirculation. Search supplies 24%, direct 15%, social 10%, and external referrals 9%. The leading AI referrer, ChatGPT, accounts for less than 1%.
Recirculation is the lever a publisher controls. It depends on having something related to link to, which is what an evergreen section provides: the explainer behind the story, the guide that answers the question the story raised, the reference page that stays current. Every Aranx article carries verified internal links to related coverage for that reason.

Search referrals fell hardest for small publishers
Chartbeat data published by Axios in March 2026 showed a 60% two-year decline in referral traffic from traditional search for small publishers with 1,000 to 10,000 daily pageviews, against 47% for medium publishers and 22% for large ones. Google Search and Discover pageviews fell 34% and 15% between December 2024 and December 2025. Chatbots still sent under 1% of pageviews.
SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data, estimated that 68.01% of US Google searches from January to April 2026 ended without a click, up from 60.45% in 2024, with the caveat that the two panels differ. Fewer clicks per search means each page has to earn its visit with an answer the summary cannot replace.

Search is still how most people get news online
Pew Research Center's News Platform Fact Sheet, based on 5,153 US adults surveyed August 18 to 24, 2025, found that 65% get news often or sometimes from news websites or apps, 63% from search, 53% from social media, and 9% from AI chatbots. Only 2% often get news from a chatbot.
The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, from online surveys in 48 markets, put weekly AI chatbot use for news at 10%, up from 7% a year earlier. Across 27 markets, 4% of respondents said they always or often click through to sources from chatbots, against 19% from search. Search still sends the reader. The chatbot mostly does not.

Meet Google's requirements without chasing placements
Google's AI features documentation says a page is eligible to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode if it is indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. It recommends internal links, textual content, and structured data that matches the visible page. Its Discover guidance says older content can appear if it is helpful, asks for images at least 1,200 pixels wide, and calls Discover traffic less predictable than search.
Its helpful-content guidance asks whether content provides original information, reporting, or analysis, warns against mainly summarizing what others say, and asks that AI use be self-evident to readers. For an evergreen desk, that means a byline, a disclosure line, and an editor who adds what the draft cannot.

Under-35 readers arrive through social, not search
The Reuters Institute asked which gateway people use most for online news. Among those under 35, 43% named social media and 22% search, with 15% going direct. Among those 35 and over, 30% named social, 23% search, and 25% direct. Search as the main gateway held steady for older readers and fell three points among the young.
Evergreen search content serves the reader who already has a question. It does not replace the social and direct strategies that reach younger audiences. Run it as one desk among several, sized to the section where readers arrive with a query.

Use Aranx for the evergreen desk
Connect the site. Aranx gathers the publication's context and competing coverage, proposes audience profiles you can edit, and builds a style profile for the section. Enable the content strategies that fit, generate keyword ideas for explainer and reference searches, and set the schedule. Articles arrive with images and internal links and go to your CMS through the API or to WordPress, as drafts or published posts. The how it works section shows the steps, the documentation covers the API and WordPress, and the pricing page shows what one connected site includes. Brand newsrooms run a similar desk; see the PR and brand teams page.
Start with one section and one editor. Set the disclosure line and the byline policy before the first article. Aranx supports a daily evergreen cadence. Search and Discover traffic depend on the usefulness of the articles, the site, and the news cycle, and nobody can promise a placement.
Match the reader question to the content
Illustrative examples for a regional news site. Choose topics from your own coverage and search data.
| Reader question | Best starting format | What the page must show |
|---|---|---|
| What does the new local ordinance mean for me? | Explainer | What changed, who it affects, when, and the source document |
| How do I register to vote here? | How-to guide | Verified steps, deadlines, and official links |
| Who is on the council and what do they do? | Reference page | Names, roles, terms, and a dated update log |
| Which recycling rules apply in my area? | Guide | Rules by area, checked against the official schedule |
| What happened in the long-running case? | Timeline | Dated events linked to the original reporting |
