The short version
- Set up separate Google Business Profiles for sales and for service, because Google lets dealerships list departments like sales, service and parts, and new-car dealers can add one profile per brand they sell new.
- Keep your dealer pages on Edmunds, Cars.com, Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader current, because 75% of buyers in Cox Automotive's 2025 study used third-party sites while shopping.
- Write pages for the questions buyers ask beyond your stock, like trade-in value, financing with past credit problems and lease versus buy, because 71% of buyers started shopping unsure which vehicle they would buy.
- Any page or Google post that names a monthly payment or a down payment must also show the down payment, the repayment terms and the APR under federal Truth in Lending rules.
- of 2025 car buyers used third-party sites like Edmunds, Cars.com, Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader, more than any other type of site.

Your next tasks
1
Set up sales and service as separate Google profiles
Google lets a dealership have a profile for the dealership and more for its departments. A separate service profile shows service hours and the service phone to people who need a repair, and keeps your sales profile about buying.
Start here: Search Google for your dealership and write down every profile that appears, including old names and duplicates. Estimated time: 1 hour.
2
Add real lot photos and fill in attributes
Google's dealer guide says to add photos regularly and fill in attributes like payment types. Photos of your actual lot, staff and service bays show shoppers you are a real place.
Start here: Take 15 photos on your phone: storefront with sign, showroom, service drive, waiting area, staff and a few vehicles on the lot. Estimated time: 45 min.
3
Start a weekly review routine
Shoppers read dealer reviews looking for signs of fake praise and for how you handle problems. Reviews that name a salesperson, a vehicle or a service advisor read as real.
Start here: Have each salesperson and service advisor text the review request template on delivery day or at service pickup. Estimated time: 30 min.

What the search data tells car dealerships
Aranx compared this page's 13 selected searches. Use the counts to compare customer needs, then choose a topic that fits what you offer. National counts do not tell you how many customers you can reach in your own service area.
Compare searches from people ready to act
- car dealerships near me
- 673,000
- used cars near me
- 450,000
- toyota dealership near me
- 368,000
These are the largest reported action searches in this sample, measured as average monthly US searches. A larger count does not mean a page is easier to rank. Match the page to the customer's actual question and your ability to help.
Use seasonality to decide when to prepare
For "car dealerships near me", March 2026 had 823,000 searches. October 2025 had 550,000. The peak was 1.5 times the low. Compare this pattern with your own season and customer history before scheduling content.
Sources, method and limits
Prepared by Aranx. Search source: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO, United States, August 2026. We rechecked all 416 distinct customer queries across the 30 playbooks on October 13, 2026. Location: United States. Language: English. Search partners are excluded.
This is an editorial sample, not a complete list or a survey of businesses. Google Ads counts are approximate and can group similar phrases. Ad prices vary by place, time and advertiser. They do not measure organic ranking difficulty or expected revenue.
The seasonal comparison divides the highest monthly count by the lowest in the series. The action-search comparison sorts the reported average monthly counts for searches labeled ready to act. These are Aranx calculations, not customer results.

Measure vehicle sales over 90 days
Download the results worksheet from the planner. Record your baseline before changing anything. Track website search clicks, inquiries and vehicle sales in separate columns.
Use Search Console for website search clicks. Record the source people report and the outcome you can confirm. A click count alone does not show whether more people chose your business.
Note changes to pages, ads, pricing, availability and seasonality. Review the pattern after 90 days and choose your next task. Keep customer names and contact details out of the worksheet.

Set up sales and service as separate Google profiles
1 hour
Google lets a dealership have a profile for the dealership and more for its departments. A separate service profile shows service hours and the service phone to people who need a repair, and keeps your sales profile about buying.
- Search Google for your dealership and write down every profile that appears, including old names and duplicates.
- Keep your main profile for sales. Use the category Car dealer, or your brand category, such as Toyota dealer, if you are franchised.
- Create a service profile named with your dealership name plus the department, as in Google's example "South Bay Toyota Service & Parts", with the category Car service or Auto repair shop.
- New-car dealers can add one profile for each brand they sell new. Used-car dealers cannot create profiles per brand.
- Set the sales profile hours to your sales hours. If new and used sales hours differ, Google says to use the new sales hours. Add other hours under More hours.
Add real lot photos and fill in attributes
45 min
Google's dealer guide says to add photos regularly and fill in attributes like payment types. Photos of your actual lot, staff and service bays show shoppers you are a real place.
- Take 15 photos on your phone: storefront with sign, showroom, service drive, waiting area, staff and a few vehicles on the lot.
- Upload them to each profile, matched to the right department.
- In Edit profile, fill in the attributes you can edit, such as payment types and accessibility.
- Google is testing a Cars for Sale section on dealer profiles. Look for Cars for Sale under Edit profile, or ask your inventory provider about Google's interest form.
Start a weekly review routine
30 min
Shoppers read dealer reviews looking for signs of fake praise and for how you handle problems. Reviews that name a salesperson, a vehicle or a service advisor read as real.
- Have each salesperson and service advisor text the review request template on delivery day or at service pickup.
- Use the review link from each department's own profile so sales and service reviews land in the right place.
- Never pay customers or offer a discount for a 5-star review. The FTC's 2024 rule bans incentives tied to a review's sentiment, bans reviews written by your managers, and limits undisclosed reviews from staff.
- Reply to every review within two days. Use the negative review template for complaints.
Check payment and price claims on your site and posts
1 hour
Federal Truth in Lending rules still apply to every ad that names a payment, even after a court struck down the FTC's CARS Rule in January 2025. The FTC still goes after dealers for misleading financing terms and bait-and-switch pricing.
- Search your website and Google posts for phrases like "$299 a month" or "$1,000 down".
- Where a payment or a down payment appears, add the down payment, the repayment terms and the APR right next to it, or remove the payment.
- Check that every advertised price matches a vehicle you have, and check your state's rules on which fees must be included in an advertised price.
- Ask your F&I manager or compliance vendor to review any lease ads before they run.
Fix your homepage title and contact details
30 min
The homepage title is the line people click in Google. Mismatched phone numbers between your site and your profiles send calls to the wrong desk.
- Set the homepage title to the format in the search preview above.
- Make sure the sales and service phone numbers on your site match each Google profile.
- Put your address, sales hours and service hours in the site footer.
- Run your homepage and one vehicle page through PageSpeed Insights at pagespeed.web.dev and send the report to your website provider.
Your 90-day SEO plan for car dealerships
After the first week, work through one phase at a time. Most businesses see their Google Business Profile move first and their website pages later.
Weeks 1 to 2
Clean up your Google presence
Every department is easy to find, call and visit from Google.
- Finish the five first-week tasks.
- Find duplicate profiles for old dealership names or moved departments, and mark closed ones as permanently closed.
- Match your dealership name, address and phone on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, DealerRater and Facebook.
- Post a Google update each week, such as a new arrival, a service tip or a staff introduction. Keep payment amounts out of posts unless the full terms are there too.
- Reply to every sales and service review.
Weeks 3 to 4
Build the money pages
Buyers get answers to their money questions before they visit.
- Write a trade-in page that explains how you appraise a trade, with a short form. Searches for "trade in value" run about 27,100 a month.
- Write a financing page for first-time buyers and people with past credit problems, with Truth in Lending disclosures wherever you name a payment.
- If you offer buy here pay here, give it its own page. Searches for "buy here pay here near me" run about 110,000 a month.
- Add a "Why buy from us" block to every vehicle page with your reviews, your inspection or warranty details and directions.
- Add a written description to vehicle pages that only have photos and a price.
Month 2
Answer shopping questions
Buyers who have not picked a vehicle find your answers first.
- Publish two comparison posts, such as lease vs buy and two popular models you sell.
- Write a certified pre-owned page that explains the brand program or your own used-car inspection.
- Add a service page for each common job, such as oil changes, brakes, tires and state inspection.
- Update your dealer profiles on Cars.com, CarGurus, Edmunds and DealerRater with the same photos and description.
- Open Google Search Console and note pages with many views in search but few clicks.
Month 3
Get ready for the spring peak
Your profiles and pages are current before searches rise in February and March.
- Publish a best time to buy a car post based on your own sales and incentive calendar.
- Refresh lot and showroom photos on every Google profile.
- Review all Google posts and pages for payment language and fix any missing disclosures.
- Add three customer questions with short answers to your trade-in, financing and service pages.
- Count reviews by department for the quarter and set a weekly target for the next one.

No time to write them?
Aranx finds the searches your customers make, writes posts like these in your voice with images and links, and publishes them to your WordPress or Shopify blog on a schedule you set.
See how Aranx worksHow to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers
Cox Automotive's 2025 car buyer study found 19% of buyers, and 25% of new-vehicle buyers, used AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot or Google's AI Overviews while shopping. Those buyers reported higher satisfaction with the purchase. Typical questions look like "best used SUV under $20,000 near [town]" or "which dealer near me has good service reviews".
AI tools pull from your website, your Google profiles, third-party sites like Cars.com and Edmunds, and reviews. To be named, publish plain facts on your own site: the brands you sell, the towns you deliver to, your service hours, how you inspect used cars and how many lenders you work with.
Give each vehicle its own page with a written description that Google can read, not only photos and a price. Reviews that mention a salesperson, a vehicle and a town give AI tools details they can repeat.

5 SEO mistakes car dealerships make
One Google profile for sales and service
Google allows separate department profiles with their own names and categories. A separate service profile shows the right hours and phone to service customers.
Monthly payments without the full terms
A payment amount or down payment in an ad triggers Truth in Lending disclosures for the down payment, repayment terms and APR. Add them next to the payment or remove the payment.
Vehicle pages with no words
A page with only photos and a price gives Google little to show. Add a short written description, key features and a "Why buy from us" block.
Paying for 5-star reviews
Rewards tied to positive reviews break the FTC's 2024 rule. Ask every customer the same way and reward staff for asking, not for the star rating.
A profile for each brand on a used lot
Google does not allow used-car dealers to create profiles for each brand they sell. Keep one dealership profile and add separate ones only for real departments.
Questions car dealerships ask about SEO
How long does SEO take for a car dealership?
Google profile fixes, like separate service profiles, correct hours and new photos, can change what shoppers see within days. Ranking a trade-in, financing or comparison page usually takes three to six months, because national sites like Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book write about the same topics. Dealers who add one useful page a month and collect reviews every week tend to see steady growth in calls and form leads.
We already pay for Cars.com and CarGurus. Why do SEO too?
Third-party sites matter, since 75% of buyers in Cox Automotive's 2025 study used them. But those leads stop when you stop paying, and your vehicles sit next to competitors' on the same page. Your Google profiles, reviews and website pages bring shoppers who searched for you or your town directly. Both work best together, with matching photos, hours and details.
Should our service department have its own Google profile?
Yes, in most cases. Google's dealer guide says all dealerships can have a profile for the dealership plus profiles for departments like sales, parts and service. Name it with your dealership name plus the department, and use a category such as Car service or Auto repair shop. This puts service hours and the service phone in front of people looking for repairs.
Is the FTC CARS Rule in effect?
No. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated the FTC's CARS Rule on January 27, 2025, before it took effect. That does not free dealers from other rules. Federal Truth in Lending rules still require disclosures when an ad names a payment or down payment, and the FTC still pursues deceptive pricing and add-on charges. Check your state's dealer advertising rules as well.
Do we need a blog?
You need pages that answer what buyers ask your salespeople. Posts on lease versus buy, trade-in value, certified pre-owned programs and financing with past credit problems match real searches with thousands of searches a month. Generic auto news rarely brings anyone to your lot. One solid post a month, written with your own numbers and local examples, is enough to start.
How should we handle fake or unfair reviews?
Reply calmly in public, without sharing deal or repair details, and offer a named manager to call. If a review breaks Google's policies, for example because the person was never a customer, report it through your profile. Do not threaten legal action to get a review removed unless you have a real legal basis. The FTC's 2024 rule bans groundless legal threats and intimidation used to suppress reviews.
