What the search data tells churches
Aranx compared this page's 14 selected searches. Use the counts to compare customer needs, then choose a topic that fits what you offer. National counts do not tell you how many customers you can reach in your own service area.
Compare searches from people ready to act
- churches near me
- 1,220,000
- catholic church near me
- 1,000,000
- baptist church near me
- 90,500
These are the largest reported action searches in this sample, measured as average monthly US searches. A larger count does not mean a page is easier to rank. Match the page to the customer's actual question and your ability to help.
Use seasonality to decide when to prepare
For "churches near me", September 2025 had 1,500,000 searches. November 2025 had 1,220,000. The peak was 1.2 times the low. Compare this pattern with your own season and customer history before scheduling content.
Sources, method and limits
Prepared by Aranx. Search source: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO, United States, August 2026. We rechecked all 416 distinct customer queries across the 30 playbooks on October 13, 2026. Location: United States. Language: English. Search partners are excluded.
This is an editorial sample, not a complete list or a survey of businesses. Google Ads counts are approximate and can group similar phrases. Ad prices vary by place, time and advertiser. They do not measure organic ranking difficulty or expected revenue.
The seasonal comparison divides the highest monthly count by the lowest in the series. The action-search comparison sorts the reported average monthly counts for searches labeled ready to act. These are Aranx calculations, not customer results.

Measure first-time visits over 90 days
Download the results worksheet from the planner. Record your baseline before changing anything. Track website search clicks, inquiries and first-time visits in separate columns.
Use Search Console for website search clicks. Record the source people report and the outcome you can confirm. A click count alone does not show whether more people chose your business.
Note changes to pages, ads, pricing, availability and seasonality. Review the pattern after 90 days and choose your next task. Keep customer names and contact details out of the worksheet.

Claim and set up your Google Business Profile
45 min
"Churches near me" gets about 1.22 million searches a month in the US. Your profile decides what a newcomer sees in the map results: your name, photos, address and reviews.
- Search your church's name on Google. Claim the profile if it exists, or create one at business.google.com.
- Use the name on your sign. Do not add "non-denominational" or your city unless they are part of the name, because Google can suspend profiles with extra words.
- Pick the most specific category that fits, such as "Baptist church" or "Catholic church", instead of only "Church".
- Do not enter worship times as opening hours. Google's guidelines say places with varied schedules, such as worship services, should not list hours. Put service times in your description and in a weekly update.
- Add photos of the entrance, the parking lot, the kids check-in area and a service in progress.
- Select Edit profile to make changes, then Save.
Build a "Plan your visit" page
1.5 hours
Pew found that 85% of people looking for a new church attended a service before choosing. This page has one job: make that first visit feel easy.
- Put service times, the address and a map at the top of the page.
- Answer what to wear, how long the service lasts, where to park and which door to use.
- Explain what happens with children, including check-in and age groups.
- Add a photo of the entrance and a greeter, so visitors know where to go and who to look for.
- Add a short form or a text number so a visitor can tell you they are coming.
Rewrite your homepage title and first lines
30 min
A homepage that opens with a sermon series name gives Google nothing to match. It needs plain words that say what you are, where you are and when you meet.
- Change your homepage title to the pattern in the search preview above, with your city in it.
- Write one sentence near the top that names your denomination or tradition, your city and your Sunday times.
- Write your address as text in the footer of every page, not only inside a map or an image.
- Use the same name, address and phone number on your site as on Google.
Ask members for honest reviews
20 min
A visitor choosing between two churches reads what members say. BrightLocal found that 89% of consumers expect owners to reply to reviews, so your replies count too.
- Open your profile on Google and copy your review link.
- Share it once in your newsletter or by text, and ask members to describe their honest experience.
- Do not ask the congregation to post reviews during the service. Google says businesses should not pressure people to leave reviews while on site.
- Do not ask members to mention a pastor or a ministry by name. Google bans requests for specific content in reviews.
- Reply to every review, and never mention counseling, prayer requests or personal matters in a reply.
Add your church to Apple Maps, Bing and church directories
1 hour
Apple Maps is the default map app on iPhone, and church finders are where some newcomers start. A wrong address or old service time on any of them sends a visitor to the wrong place.
- Claim your place in Apple Business Connect.
- Claim your listing in Bing Places.
- Add or update your church on Church Finder. Catholic parishes should also check MassTimes.
- Find your denomination's own church locator and correct your entry.
- Use the exact same name, address and phone number on each one.
Your 90-day SEO plan for churches
After the first week, work through one phase at a time. Most businesses see their Google Business Profile move first and their website pages later.
Weeks 1 to 2
Get found on maps
Make sure a newcomer who searches for a church nearby sees your correct address, service times and photos.
- Finish the five first-week tasks.
- Post a Google update every week with this Sunday's sermon topic and service times.
- Make sure your Facebook page shows the same address, phone and service times as Google.
- Add new photos each month, such as the building at night, a children's room or a fellowship meal (with permission).
Weeks 3 to 4
Write the pages visitors look for
Give each ministry and each common question its own page that Google can show.
- Create pages for kids, youth group, Bible study and any services in another language. "Bible study near me" gets 8,100 searches a month and "spanish church near me" gets 6,600.
- Put your city and the ministry name in each page title, such as "Youth group in [city]".
- Add a "What we believe" page in plain words that names your denomination or tradition.
- Link each ministry page from your Plan your visit page.
Month 2
Answer newcomers' questions
Publish short posts that answer what first-time visitors search before they come.
- Write two posts from the blog list below.
- Post each sermon with a short written summary, not only audio or video, so search engines can read the topic.
- Ask two local groups you serve with, such as a food bank or a school, to link to your site.
- Open Google Search Console and note which searches bring people to your site.
- Check whether your church qualifies for Google Ad Grants. Google requires IRS 501(c)(3) registration or a listing under a group exemption.
Month 3
Prepare for Christmas and Easter
Have holiday pages live before the search spikes, not the week before.
- Publish your Christmas Eve page by early November with times, parking and kids information.
- Publish your Easter page six weeks ahead. "Easter service near me" went from 4,400 searches in March to 33,100 in April.
- Post a Google update for each holiday service two weeks before it.
- Add a homepage banner that links to the holiday page.
- After each holiday, send guests who filled out a card a thank-you note and an invitation to come back.

No time to write them?
Aranx finds the searches your customers make, writes posts like these in your voice with images and links, and publishes them to your WordPress or Shopify blog on a schedule you set.
See how Aranx worksHow to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers
People ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers questions like "which churches in Raleigh have a good kids program" or "is there a Lutheran church near me with a contemporary service". BrightLocal's 2026 survey found that 45% of US consumers used AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before. A church website that shows only a welcome video and a sermon player gives these tools little to read.
Write your facts as plain sentences: denomination, service times, worship style, length, kids ages, parking, accessibility and languages. Put them on your Plan your visit page and in your Google Business Profile description, and keep both the same.
Once a month, ask ChatGPT and Google about churches in your city with the details that describe you, such as "Methodist church in [city] with a nursery". Note whether your church appears and whether the times are right. If a tool shows old times, fix your website first, then Google, then Facebook and the directories.

5 SEO mistakes churches make
Listing worship times as opening hours
Google's guidelines say places with varied schedules, such as worship services, should not list hours. Put service times in your description, a weekly update and your website.
Extra words in your Google name
Google bans service and location words that are not part of your real name, and it can suspend the profile. Use the name on your sign and pick a specific category instead.
A homepage that shows only the sermon series
Lead with who you are, where you are and when you meet, in plain text. Move the series graphic lower on the page.
Asking for reviews from the pulpit
Google says businesses should not pressure people to leave reviews while on site. Send the link by email or text after Sunday instead.
Posting holiday pages the week before
Christmas Eve searches went from 2,400 in November to 90,500 in December. Publish by early November so Google has time to find the page.
Questions churches ask about SEO
How long does SEO take for a church?
Fixing your Google Business Profile can change what newcomers see within a few weeks. New pages on your website often take several months to show up for searches, and no one can promise a date. That is why holiday pages should go up early. Start with the profile and the Plan your visit page, then add one ministry page or post every two weeks.
Can our church get free Google ads?
Possibly. Google Ad Grants gives eligible US nonprofits up to $10,000 a month in search ads. Google requires IRS 501(c)(3) registration or a listing under a group exemption. The IRS says churches are tax exempt automatically and do not have to apply, so many churches never did. Check whether your denomination holds a group ruling that lists you, or apply for IRS recognition.
Should we list our service times as business hours on Google?
No. Google's guidelines say places with varied schedules, such as worship services, should not list hours. Put your service times in the first lines of your profile description, in a weekly Google update and at the top of your website.
Do we need a blog if we already post sermons?
Sermons answer questions for people who already attend. Newcomers search for practical things like "what to wear to church" or "how long is a church service". A few short posts that answer those questions, with your church's real answers, do more for search than a weekly sermon upload. Add a written summary to each sermon so Google can read its topic.
Is it OK to ask our members for Google reviews?
Yes, if you ask everyone in the same way and offer nothing in return. Google bans asking only people you expect to be positive, asking for specific words or names, and pressuring people to post while on site. Send one email or text after a Sunday with your review link, and reply to each review without personal or pastoral details.
Two congregations share our building. Can we both have a Google profile?
Yes, if each congregation runs on its own. Google's guidelines allow separate profiles at one address when the organizations operate independently, each with its own name and its own category. Do not combine both names in one profile. Make sure each profile has its own phone number and website page, so Google and visitors can tell the two apart.
