What the search data tells gyms
Aranx compared this page's 14 selected searches. Use the counts to compare customer needs, then choose a topic that fits what you offer. National counts do not tell you how many customers you can reach in your own service area.
Compare searches from people ready to act
- gym near me
- 1,830,000
- gyms near me
- 1,220,000
- personal trainer near me
- 165,000
These are the largest reported action searches in this sample, measured as average monthly US searches. A larger count does not mean a page is easier to rank. Match the page to the customer's actual question and your ability to help.
Use seasonality to decide when to prepare
For "gym near me", January 2026 had 2,240,000 searches. September 2025 had 1,830,000. The peak was 1.2 times the low. Compare this pattern with your own season and customer history before scheduling content.
Sources, method and limits
Prepared by Aranx. Search source: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO, United States, August 2026. We rechecked all 416 distinct customer queries across the 30 playbooks on October 13, 2026. Location: United States. Language: English. Search partners are excluded.
This is an editorial sample, not a complete list or a survey of businesses. Google Ads counts are approximate and can group similar phrases. Ad prices vary by place, time and advertiser. They do not measure organic ranking difficulty or expected revenue.
The seasonal comparison divides the highest monthly count by the lowest in the series. The action-search comparison sorts the reported average monthly counts for searches labeled ready to act. These are Aranx calculations, not customer results.

Measure new memberships over 90 days
Download the results worksheet from the planner. Record your baseline before changing anything. Track website search clicks, inquiries and new memberships in separate columns.
Use Search Console for website search clicks. Record the source people report and the outcome you can confirm. A click count alone does not show whether more people chose your business.
Note changes to pages, ads, pricing, availability and seasonality. Review the pattern after 90 days and choose your next task. Keep customer names and contact details out of the worksheet.

0 of 5 done
Set the right category, name and hours on Google
30 min
Google uses your category to match you to searches. A Pilates studio filed under plain Gym gets lined up against every big-box club in town.
- Go to business.google.com and open your Business Profile.
- Set the most specific primary category, such as Pilates studio, Boxing gym or Yoga studio. Google even uses a big club as an example of Health club, not Gym.
- Make the name match your sign. Google accepts "Equinox SOHO" but not "Equinox near SOHO", so leave out areas and words like "best" or "24/7".
- If you have open gym hours, set them as your main hours and add staffed hours under More hours.
- If you only run scheduled classes, note that Google lists businesses with varied class schedules among those that should not show regular hours.
- Add special hours for New Year's Day and other holidays now.
Let people book a class from Google
30 min
Reserve with Google lets people save a spot in a class straight from Maps and Search. A booking button turns a curious searcher into a name on your class list.
- Check whether your scheduling software is listed at google.com/maps/reserve/partners.
- If it is, open the booking settings in your Business Profile and choose that provider. Google says providers show up on your profile within a week.
- Ask your provider whether it charges for bookings that come through Google.
- If your software is not a partner, add your own booking or trial page as the booking link.
- Book a test class from Google Maps on your phone and cancel it.
List your programs, prices and real photos
45 min
People compare gyms on what they can do there and what it costs. Clear programs and real photos answer those questions before anyone has to call.
- Add each program as a service in your Business Profile, such as group classes, personal training, open gym, kids classes or reformer Pilates.
- Give each service one plain sentence and a starting price if you can.
- Upload photos of the entrance, the gym floor at a normal hour, the locker rooms, a class in action and your coaches.
- Skip stock photos of models. Show the people and equipment a new member will meet.
- Fill in every attribute that applies, such as wheelchair access or free parking.
Start a review routine with new members
20 min
BrightLocal found 47% of consumers will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and most only trust recent ones. New members who just hit a goal are your best reviewers.
- Get your review link or QR code from your Business Profile.
- Put the QR code at the front desk and in the member app's welcome message.
- Send the review request about 30 days after a member joins, or after a milestone like a first pull-up or race.
- Ask every member the same way, not only your biggest fans.
- Do not offer a free class, month, shirt or shake for a review. Google prohibits reviews tied to any reward.
Reply to your last 20 reviews
45 min
BrightLocal found 89% of consumers expect owners to reply to reviews. A calm reply to a billing or cancellation complaint shows new members how you treat people who leave.
- Open the reviews in your Business Profile and sort by newest.
- Reply to every review from the last three months, good and bad.
- Name the class, coach or result the member mentioned, and sign with your first name.
- For billing or cancellation complaints, explain your policy in general terms and give a direct phone number or email.
- Never post a member's account details, attendance, payments, injuries or health information in a reply.
Your 90-day SEO plan for gyms
After the first week, work through one phase at a time. Most businesses see their Google Business Profile move first and their website pages later.
Weeks 1 to 2
Get your Google profile right
Make your profile answer what a new member wants to know before a first visit.
- Finish the five first-week tasks above.
- Paste the business description template below and fill in the brackets.
- Post a Google update with your intro offer and its end date.
- Add a photo set for each program, with captions that name the program.
- Ask each coach for a short bio and one photo for your website.
Weeks 3 to 4
Fix your website basics
Give people a site that shows prices, programs and the next step on a phone.
- Change your homepage title to match the search preview above.
- Publish a pricing page with each plan, its starting price and the cancellation terms in plain words.
- Build one page per program, such as boxing, Pilates, personal training or kids classes.
- Put a typed weekly class overview above the booking widget so it reads on any phone.
- Test the homepage in PageSpeed Insights and set up Google Search Console.
Month 2
Claim listings and local partners
Show up in the apps and local sites people already use to find a workout.
- Claim Yelp, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, and copy the same name, address, phone and hours.
- Decide whether ClassPass or Wellhub fit your capacity and prices, and apply if they do.
- Ask physical therapists, running clubs and local employers to link to your site or share your intro offer.
- Build a page for adults 65 and older if you serve them. HFA data shows this is the fastest-growing member group.
- Make sure your intro offer is the same on Google, your site and every app.
Month 3
Publish and get ready for January
Answer the questions new members type and be ready before the January rush.
- Publish two blog posts from the ideas below.
- Publish your New Year offer page by early December.

No time to write them?
Aranx finds the searches your customers make, writes posts like these in your voice with images and links, and publishes them to your WordPress or Shopify blog on a schedule you set.
See how Aranx worksHow to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers
People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews things like "beginner-friendly boxing gym near downtown with evening classes" or "Pilates studio that takes ClassPass." BrightLocal found 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. These answers name a handful of places, so specific details decide who gets picked.
Give the tools plain facts to repeat. Put your programs, class times, starting prices, coach certifications and features like a sauna, childcare or 24-hour access on your website in typed text. Use the same name, hours and offer on Google, Yelp, ClassPass and Apple Maps. Reviews that mention a class, a coach or a result may help too, so it is fine to ask members to say what they do at your gym.
Test it once a month. Ask ChatGPT and Google for the kind of gym you are in your area, such as "best yoga studio for beginners in [your city]." If you are missing, look at the sites the answer cites, then claim or update those listings first.

5 SEO mistakes gyms make
Plain Gym category for a studio
Pick the most specific category, such as Pilates studio, Yoga studio or Boxing gym. Google tells businesses to use specific categories, not keywords.
Keywords in your Google name
Google rejects names like "Equinox near SOHO" and can suspend profiles with extra words. Use the name on your sign.
No prices anywhere
Show at least a starting price and the cancellation terms. People search "how much is a gym membership" about 4,400 times a month and will pick a gym that answers.
Free month for a review
Google prohibits reviews tied to discounts or free services. Ask every member the same way and give nothing in return.
Updating everything in January
Searches jump in January, so offers, photos and prices need to be live by mid-December. Plan a second refresh for late April, before the May rise.
Questions gyms ask about SEO
How long does SEO take for a gym?
Fixes to your Google profile, such as category, photos and booking, can show within days or weeks. Climbing in map results for "gym near me" takes longer, usually a few months of steady reviews, replies and website pages. Because searches peak in January, start the work by early fall so it is in place for the New Year rush. Track trial signups by source each month to see what works.
Should I pay for Google Ads or work on SEO?
Do both if you can afford it, but start with SEO, because your Google profile and reviews are free and keep working. In our data "gym near me" cost about $1.85 a click and "gyms near me" about $2.99, so a small ad budget in January can fill an intro offer. Ads stop the day you stop paying. Reviews and a strong profile keep bringing trial signups.
Should I put membership prices on my website?
Yes, at least a starting price. People search "how much is a gym membership" about 4,400 times a month and "how much does a personal trainer cost" about 5,400 times. If you hide prices, they will click on a gym that shows them. List the price, what is included and how to cancel in plain words. A clear cancellation policy also heads off angry reviews later.
Should I list my studio on ClassPass or Wellhub?
It depends on your capacity and prices. ClassPass lists in-person studio offerings with a capacity of 80 spots or fewer, and Wellhub connects you to employees on company wellness plans. Both can fill empty spots and put your name in front of new people. Treat them as extra channels. Keep your Google profile and website as your main home, and make your class times match everywhere.
Can I give a free class or merch for a Google review?
No. Google prohibits reviews influenced by a payment, discount, free goods or services, and it can remove those reviews. The FTC rule on reviews also bans rewards that depend on a positive review. Ask every member for an honest review with a QR code at the front desk or a message after their first month. Ask everyone, not only your biggest fans.
Should my personal trainers have their own Google profiles?
Only if they work like independent professionals. Google allows a separate profile for a public-facing practitioner with their own clients who can be reached at the location during stated hours. Coaches who teach your classes on staff are better shown on your main profile and on a coach page on your website. Do not create extra profiles just to take up more space in the map.
Do I need a blog for my gym?
You need useful pages more than a busy blog. Start with a pricing page, one page per program and a first visit page. Then add posts that answer real searches, such as "pilates vs yoga" with about 12,100 searches a month or "what to bring to the gym." One honest, specific post a month is plenty, and each one gives you something to share with members.
How should I reply to a review about billing or cancellation?
Stay calm and keep account details private. Thank the person, explain your policy in general terms and give a direct phone number or email so you can sort it out. Never post payment history, attendance or health details. Then look at the pattern. If several reviews mention the same billing problem, fix the process and write the cancellation terms plainly on your pricing page.
