What the search data tells plumbers
Aranx compared this page's 14 selected searches. Use the counts to compare customer needs, then choose a topic that fits what you offer. National counts do not tell you how many customers you can reach in your own service area.
Compare searches from people ready to act
- plumber near me
- 823,000
- water heater repair near me
- 90,500
- drain cleaning near me
- 90,500
These are the largest reported action searches in this sample, measured as average monthly US searches. A larger count does not mean a page is easier to rank. Match the page to the customer's actual question and your ability to help.
Use seasonality to decide when to prepare
For "plumber near me", February 2026 had 1,220,000 searches. November 2025 had 550,000. The peak was 2.2 times the low. Compare this pattern with your own season and customer history before scheduling content.
Sources, method and limits
Prepared by Aranx. Search source: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO, United States, August 2026. We rechecked all 416 distinct customer queries across the 30 playbooks on October 13, 2026. Location: United States. Language: English. Search partners are excluded.
This is an editorial sample, not a complete list or a survey of businesses. Google Ads counts are approximate and can group similar phrases. Ad prices vary by place, time and advertiser. They do not measure organic ranking difficulty or expected revenue.
The seasonal comparison divides the highest monthly count by the lowest in the series. The action-search comparison sorts the reported average monthly counts for searches labeled ready to act. These are Aranx calculations, not customer results.

Measure booked jobs over 90 days
Download the results worksheet from the planner. Record your baseline before changing anything. Track website search clicks, inquiries and booked jobs in separate columns.
Use Search Console for website search clicks. Record the source people report and the outcome you can confirm. A click count alone does not show whether more people chose your business.
Note changes to pages, ads, pricing, availability and seasonality. Review the pattern after 90 days and choose your next task. Keep customer names and contact details out of the worksheet.

Fix your Google Business Profile
45 min
The map results for "plumber near me" come from Google Business Profiles. A complete and accurate profile is the fastest way to show up there.
- Sign in to Google, search your business name, and select Edit profile.
- Set your main category to Plumber. Add a second category only if it describes your whole business, not one service.
- Write your business name exactly as it appears on your truck and license. Remove extra words like "24/7" or "Drain Cleaning" from the name.
- If customers do not come to your shop, remove the address. Then select Location, select Edit next to Service area, and add up to 20 cities or ZIP codes.
- Set hours to the times a real person answers the phone, and use a local number that rings you, not a call center.
List every plumbing job you sell
30 min
Google matches your profile to specific searches like "water heater repair near me", which gets 90,500 searches a month. The services list tells Google which jobs you do.
- Open your Business Profile and select Edit services.
- Select every suggested service you offer.
- Select Add custom service for jobs that are missing, such as tankless water heater installation or sewer camera inspection.
- Write one or two sentences for your top five services that say what the job includes and which towns you cover.
- Select Save.
Set up a review request text
20 min
Most consumers only care about reviews from the last three months. A new review every week does more than 100 old ones.
- Search your business on Google, open your profile, and select Ask for reviews. Copy the link.
- Paste the link into the review text template below and save it as a text shortcut on your phone.
- Send it to every customer on the day you finish the job. Google bans asking only the customers you think will be happy.
- Never offer a discount, gift card or free service for a review. Google bans any reward for a review.
- Do not tell customers what to write, such as your town or the tech's name. Google prohibits asking for specific content.
Reply to your last 10 reviews
30 min
In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 80% of consumers said they are likely to use a business that replies to all of its reviews. Your replies are public, so future customers read them too.
- Go to business.google.com/reviews and pick your profile.
- Thank happy customers with one detail from the job, not the same line every time.
- Answer bad reviews with the negative review template below. Never post the customer's address, bill or what you saw inside their home.
- Set a weekly reminder to reply. 19% of consumers expect a reply on the same day they post.
Upload 10 real job photos
30 min
A homeowner has to let you into their house. Photos of your marked truck, your crew and clean finished work show them who will knock on the door.
- Take photos of your truck, your team in uniform, and five recent jobs, such as a new water heater or a repaired drain line.
- Leave out house numbers, street signs and customers' faces. Ask before you take photos inside a home.
- Upload the photos to your Business Profile.
- Add two new job photos every week.
Your 90-day SEO plan for plumbers
After the first week, work through one phase at a time. Most businesses see their Google Business Profile move first and their website pages later.
Weeks 1 to 2
Get found on the map
Your Google profile, reviews and phone are ready for the next emergency call.
- Finish the five first-week tasks above.
- Answer or return every call within 15 minutes, including nights. Forward after-hours calls to a cell phone or an answering service.
- Write your business name, address and phone number the same way on your website footer, Google, Yelp, Angi and Facebook.
- Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect and copy your Google details into them.
- Put your plumbing license number in your website footer and your Google description.
Weeks 3 to 4
Build pages for the jobs you want
Each job you want more of has its own page that answers price, timing and area questions.
- List your five most profitable jobs, such as water heater replacement, drain cleaning, leak detection, sewer line repair and sump pumps.
- Build one page per job with the service page outline below. Start with water heater repair and drain cleaning, which each get 90,500 "near me" searches a month.
- Show a starting price or a typical range on each page, or explain what changes the price.
- Put a tap-to-call button at the top of every page on phones.
- Test your homepage with PageSpeed Insights. If the mobile score is red, send the report to whoever built your site.
Month 2
Get ready for winter calls
Your site and profile are ready before frozen pipe and water heater searches peak in January and February.
- Publish a frozen pipe post before December. "How to prevent frozen pipes" went from 1,600 searches in October to 135,000 in January.
- Add a Google post every week with a real job photo and one seasonal tip. Use the winter post template below.
- If you want paid leads, apply for Google Local Services Ads now. Google says screening takes 3 to 4 weeks on average.
- Claim your Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and Nextdoor profiles and match your Google details.
- Ask your supply house, chamber of commerce or a team you sponsor to link to your website.
Month 3
Measure and repeat
You know which searches bring calls, and you do more of what works.
- Open Google Search Console and check the Performance report. Write pages for searches where your site shows up but gets few clicks.
- Check the calls and website clicks your Business Profile sent you each month.
- Have the office ask "How did you find us?" on every new booking and write down the answer.
- Publish two posts a month from the blog ideas below.
- Get past 20 Google reviews first. 47% of consumers will not use a business with fewer than 20.

See how Aranx worksHow to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers
More homeowners now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews questions like "who is a good plumber near me" or "why is my water heater leaking." In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers said they used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before. These tools answer from what they can read about you on the web: your website, your Google profile, your reviews and your directory listings.
To get named, give the tools plain facts. A page called "Water heater repair in [your town]" that lists the brands you service, your price range, your license number and the towns you cover gives an AI tool something to quote. A page that only says "quality plumbing solutions" gives it nothing. Keep your name, phone number and service area the same on every site so the tools do not mix you up with another plumber.
Reviews feed these answers too. BrightLocal found that 82% of consumers read AI-generated review summaries, and those summaries come from what your customers wrote. You cannot tell customers what to say, but a steady stream of recent reviews gives the summary real detail about the jobs you do.
Listings and directories to consider
Customers find you on these sites, and Google checks them to confirm your business details. Use the same name, address and phone number on every one.
Homeowners compare plumbers on Angi. A claimed profile with your license and photos also adds one more place where your details match.
HomeAdvisor(opens in a new tab)
A lead source for repairs and installs. Check the lead prices before you turn on paid leads.
Customers post small jobs like toilet repair and disposal installs here. A free profile shows your reviews and service area.
Neighbors ask each other for plumber recommendations on Nextdoor. A business page lets them tag you in their answer.
Yelp can list your business before you ever sign up. Claim the page so you can fix your hours and reply to reviews.
Better Business Bureau(opens in a new tab)
The BBB may already list your business even if you never claimed it. Claim it so your phone number, hours and license are right.
Bing Places(opens in a new tab)
Bing Maps shows this listing. You can import your Google profile instead of typing it again.
Apple Business Connect(opens in a new tab)
iPhone users who search in Apple Maps see this listing. BrightLocal found Apple Maps use for reviews nearly doubled in 2026.
5 SEO mistakes plumbers make
Service words in your Google business name
Google bans service and location words in the name and can suspend the profile. Use the name on your truck and license, and put services in the services list.
Showing your home address
Google's guidelines use a plumber who works from home as the example. Clear the address and set a service area instead.
Asking only happy customers for reviews
Google bans selectively asking for positive reviews, and it bans rewards for reviews. Send the same text to every customer after every job.
Letting emergency calls go to voicemail
28% of consumers choose a business in under five minutes. Forward after-hours calls to a cell phone or an answering service so a person picks up.
One page that lists every service
A customer who searches "drain cleaning near me" wants a page about drain cleaning. Give each paid job its own page with prices, photos and the towns you cover.
Questions plumbers ask about SEO
How long does SEO take for a plumber?
Changes to your Google Business Profile, like categories, services and hours, can show up within days. New pages on your website often take three to six months to rank, depending on how many plumbers near you already have strong pages and reviews. Judge progress by calls and booked jobs, not by where you rank on one day, because map results change with where the searcher is standing.
Should I pay for Google Ads or Local Services Ads instead of SEO?
They do different jobs. Local Services Ads charge for leads, not clicks, and show a Google Verified badge after Google checks your license, insurance and background. Google treats plumbing as an urgent category, so screening is stricter and takes 3 to 4 weeks on average. Regular Google Ads charge per click, and "emergency plumber" averaged $76.38 a click in the data on this page. SEO costs time, not click fees.
Do I need a blog?
You need service pages first. A blog helps once those exist, because homeowners search plumbing questions before they call. "How to prevent frozen pipes" reached 135,000 searches in January, and "why is my water heater leaking" gets about 1,900 a month. A short post that answers the question and ends with your phone number can bring calls from people who decide the job is not a do-it-yourself fix.
Can I show up in towns where I do not have an office?
Yes, through your service area. Google lets a service-area business list up to 20 cities or ZIP codes, and says the area should not reach much farther than about two hours of driving from your base. Do not rent a virtual office or mailbox to get a second address. Google says those locations are not eligible and can get your profile suspended.
Is it OK to give a discount for a Google review?
No. Google bans offering payment, discounts or free services in exchange for a review. The FTC rule on fake reviews, announced in 2024, also bans rewards tied to a positive or negative review, and the FTC can seek civil penalties. Ask every customer the same way, with no reward attached. A plain text on the day of the job works.
What do I do about a fake or unfair review?
If the review breaks Google's content rules, for example if the person was never a customer, flag it for Google to review. Then reply calmly and briefly, say you cannot find a record of the job, and invite the person to call you. Do not threaten to sue to get a review removed. The FTC rule bans groundless legal threats used to remove negative reviews.
Why did my Google profile get suspended after I edited it?
Changes to your name, address or category can trigger a new review by Google, and some owners report suspensions right after an agency edited these fields. Check your profile against Google's guidelines, fix anything that breaks them, and gather proof such as your license, a utility bill and a photo of your marked truck. Then file one reinstatement request, not several.
Which plumbing service page should I create first?
Start with a job you want more of and can deliver well. Give that service its own page with the problems customers notice, what the visit includes, price factors, real job photos and a clear way to book. Use the planner above to draft the outline. Search demand helps you compare services, but your capacity and local competition also matter.
Should I create a page for every town I serve?
Create a town page when you have useful local information to add, such as real jobs, availability, travel policies and customer questions from that town. Changing only the town name across many similar pages gives the reader little help. Keep one clear service-area page until you have enough evidence for a useful town page. A town page does not create a new Google Maps location.
Does adding more service areas make my Google profile rank farther away?
Adding a town tells customers where you work. It does not move your business closer to the person searching. Google says local results mainly depend on relevance, distance and prominence. Keep your service area accurate and build useful pages for work you actually do. Avoid opening extra profiles at mailboxes or virtual offices.
How do I know whether my SEO work brings booked jobs?
Record a baseline, then track actual calls, qualified inquiries and booked jobs each week. Ask new customers how they found you. Keep Google profile call clicks and website search clicks separate from actual calls. Note other changes, such as ads, weather or extra staff. A higher click count by itself does not show more booked jobs.
What helps a plumbing page get cited in an AI answer?
Answer a specific customer question with accurate details someone can check. State the work you do, towns you serve, price factors and booking steps in plain text. Add your own job examples with permission and keep key facts current. Google says its AI search features use the same SEO fundamentals as regular search. No page is guaranteed a citation.
