The short version
- Start with a verified Google Business Profile at a staffed office, because Google does not allow profiles for virtual offices and the map results come from these profiles.
- Give each practice area its own page that names your city and courts, explains how fees work, and answers the questions clients ask before they hire.
- Ask every client for a Google review when the matter closes, and offer nothing in return, because the FTC bans paying for positive reviews and ABA Model Rule 7.2 limits giving anything of value for a recommendation.
- Answer every call and web inquiry the same business day, because in Clio's 2024 secret shopper study only 33% of law firms replied to an email at all.
- Only 33% of the 500 law firms emailed in Clio's 2024 secret shopper study replied, and only 40% answered the phone.

The map results for "attorney near me" come from Google Business Profiles. Solo lawyers on Reddit report new profiles suspended for "deceptive content," so set yours up the way Google's rules expect from day one.

What the search data tells lawyers
Aranx compared this page's 14 selected searches. Use the counts to compare customer needs, then choose a topic that fits what you offer. National counts do not tell you how many customers you can reach in your own service area.
Compare searches from people ready to act
- personal injury lawyer near me
- 301,000
- family lawyer near me
- 110,000
- criminal defense lawyer near me
- 90,500
These are the largest reported action searches in this sample, measured as average monthly US searches. A larger count does not mean a page is easier to rank. Match the page to the customer's actual question and your ability to help.
Use seasonality to decide when to prepare
For "attorney near me", September 2025 had 60,500 searches. November 2025 had 40,500. The peak was 1.5 times the low. Compare this pattern with your own season and customer history before scheduling content.
Sources, method and limits
Prepared by Aranx. Search source: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO, United States, August 2026. We rechecked all 416 distinct customer queries across the 30 playbooks on October 13, 2026. Location: United States. Language: English. Search partners are excluded.
This is an editorial sample, not a complete list or a survey of businesses. Google Ads counts are approximate and can group similar phrases. Ad prices vary by place, time and advertiser. They do not measure organic ranking difficulty or expected revenue.
The seasonal comparison divides the highest monthly count by the lowest in the series. The action-search comparison sorts the reported average monthly counts for searches labeled ready to act. These are Aranx calculations, not customer results.

Measure booked consultations over 90 days
Download the results worksheet from the planner. Record your baseline before changing anything. Track website search clicks, inquiries and booked consultations in separate columns.
Use Search Console for website search clicks. Record the source people report and the outcome you can confirm. A click count alone does not show whether more people chose your business.
Note changes to pages, ads, pricing, availability and seasonality. Review the pattern after 90 days and choose your next task. Keep customer names and contact details out of the worksheet.
What your customers type into Google
These are real searches people make when they need lawyers. The last column is what businesses pay Google for one ad click. When your page ranks on its own, you get that click for free.

Claim and fix your Google Business Profile
45 min
The map results for "attorney near me" come from Google Business Profiles. Solo lawyers on Reddit report new profiles suspended for "deceptive content," so set yours up the way Google's rules expect from day one.
- Go to business.google.com, sign in, and select Edit profile.
- Write the firm name exactly as it appears on your sign and letterhead. Do not add "Divorce Lawyer" or your city to the name.
- Use the address of an office where you meet clients. Google does not allow profiles for virtual offices, and a coworking office needs signage and staff during business hours.
- Choose the most specific primary category for your main practice area, then add up to 9 more categories for your other practice areas.
- Fill in your hours, phone number, website and business description (750 characters at most), using the template on this page.
Set up a review request for every closed matter
20 min
Clients compare star ratings before they call a lawyer. A steady flow of recent reviews tells a stranger that real people trusted you with a real problem.
- In your Business Profile, select Ask for reviews and copy the link.
- Save the link as a text template in your phone or your case management software.
- Send it to every client when the matter closes, not only to the clients you expect to be happy.
- Offer no gift, discount or fee credit in return. The FTC rule bans incentives for positive reviews, and ABA Model Rule 7.2 limits giving anything of value for a recommendation.
- Read your state bar's rules on testimonials before you quote any review on your website.
Test how fast your firm answers
1 hour
Search brings the call, but intake decides if you get the case. In Clio's 2024 study only 40% of firms answered the phone, and only 18% of email replies gave next steps or cost information.
- Call your office from a cell phone at lunch and again after 5 pm. Write down what happens.
- Send a test question through your website form and time the reply.
- Set a rule that every inquiry gets a reply the same business day, with next steps and how fees work.
- Check that your voicemail greeting names the firm and says when you will call back.
Create a profile for each lawyer who meets clients
30 min
Google lists lawyers as individual practitioners who may have their own profile. Each lawyer profile can collect its own reviews and show up when someone searches that lawyer by name.
- List the lawyers who meet clients at the office during set hours. Paralegals and support staff do not qualify.
- If the firm has several lawyers, keep one profile for the firm and create one per lawyer. Use only the lawyer's name on it, such as "Maria Lopez, Esq."
- If you are the only lawyer at a branded firm, use one profile named in the format "Firm name: Your name".
- Do not create extra profiles for each practice area. Google allows one profile per practitioner.
Check your homepage on a phone
30 min
A person with a legal problem decides in seconds whether to call. Your phone number, practice areas and city need to show without scrolling.
- Open your homepage on your phone and check that the phone number at the top starts a call when tapped.
- Make sure the page title names your main practice area and city, such as "Family Lawyer in Tulsa".
- Run the homepage through PageSpeed Insights at pagespeed.web.dev and write down the mobile score.
- Add one line under each practice area about how fees work, such as contingency, flat fee or hourly.
- Confirm the site shows the name and contact information of at least one lawyer responsible for it, as ABA Model Rule 7.2(d) requires.
Your 90-day SEO plan for lawyers
After the first week, work through one phase at a time. Most businesses see their Google Business Profile move first and their website pages later.
Weeks 1 to 2
Get found in the map
Your firm and each lawyer have a correct, verified Google profile, and every closing client gets a review request.
- Finish the five first-week tasks.
- Claim your free profiles on Avvo and Justia, and make the firm name, address and phone number match your Google profile exactly.
- Upload 10 real photos: the building entrance, the lobby, each lawyer, and the meeting room.
- Add one service per practice area in your Business Profile, each with a short plain description.
- Write down the five questions callers ask most in the first minute of a call.
Weeks 3 to 4
Build one page per practice area
Each main practice area has its own page that answers what a client asks before hiring.
- Write one page per practice area with the practice page outline template.
- Name the courts you appear in and describe how the process runs in your county. A copied template cannot fake this.
- Explain how fees work on each page. If you publish a fee range, charge within it.
- Put "Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome" next to any case result, because ABA Model Rule 7.1 treats results without context as possibly misleading.
- Link each practice page from the homepage and from the bio of each lawyer who handles that work.
Month 2
Answer client questions in writing
Your site answers the cost and process questions people search before they call a lawyer.
- Publish four posts from the blog ideas list, one per week, starting with the cost questions.
- Have a lawyer write or review each post and sign it with their name and bar admissions.
- Never describe a client's matter in a post without the client's informed consent. ABA Formal Opinion 480 applies the confidentiality rule to lawyer blogs.
- Share each new post as a Google update from your Business Profile.
- Send review requests to clients whose matters closed in the last six months.
Month 3
Measure and decide on ads
You know which searches bring calls and whether paid ads are worth testing.
- Set up Google Search Console and look at which searches show your pages.
- Count new calls and form leads each week by source: Google profile, website, directories and referrals.
- Rewrite the practice page that gets the most visits but the fewest calls.
- If your practice area qualifies, price Google Local Services Ads, which charge per lead and show a Google Verified badge after license and background checks.
- Read every review reply you posted and confirm none reveals client information.

See how Aranx worksHow to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers
People now type legal questions into ChatGPT and read Google AI Overviews before they call anyone. They ask things like "do I need a lawyer for a car accident" or "best estate planning attorney in Tulsa." In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, AI tools such as ChatGPT ranked with Google and Facebook among the most used sources for local recommendations, and 40% of consumers said they trust AI for local searches.
AI tools differ in where they get local facts, so cover the sources they draw on. Keep your firm name, address, phone number and practice areas the same on Google, Avvo, Justia, your state bar profile and your website. On each practice page, put one client question in each heading and answer it in the first sentence below it.
Test it once a month. Ask ChatGPT and Google the questions your clients ask, with your city, and write down which firms appear and which sites the answers cite. Get listed on those sites. Never publish AI-written legal content without a lawyer's review, because ABA Model Rule 7.1 requires every statement about your services to be truthful and not misleading.

5 SEO mistakes lawyers make
Keywords in the Google business name
Use the firm name from your sign and letterhead, with nothing added. Google says extra words in the name can get the profile suspended.
A Google profile at a virtual office
Google does not allow profiles for a rented mailing address. List an office where you meet clients during posted hours, with signage and staff.
Correcting a bad review with case facts
ABA Formal Opinion 496 says a negative review alone does not allow you to reveal client information. Post a short neutral reply and offer to talk by phone.
Calling yourself a "specialist" without certification
ABA Model Rule 7.2(c) bars implying you are a certified specialist unless an approved body certified you and you name that body. Describe your practice focus in plain words.
Gifts or fee credits for reviews
The FTC rule bans incentives tied to positive reviews, and Rule 7.2 limits giving value for recommendations. Ask every client the same way and offer nothing.
Questions lawyers ask about SEO
How long does SEO take for a law firm?
A complete Google Business Profile and new reviews can change your map position within a few weeks. Practice area pages and articles usually take three to six months to bring steady calls, and longer in crowded areas like personal injury in a big city. Start with the profile and reviews because they work fastest, then build pages while you wait for them to rank.
Should a law firm pay for Google Ads or SEO?
Ads bring calls the day you turn them on, but in law the cost per click is high. Google Ads data shows an average of $147.84 per click for "personal injury lawyer near me." SEO costs time instead and keeps working after you stop paying. You can do both. Run Local Services Ads for leads now while you build the Google profile, reviews and pages that bring calls later.
Can I ask my clients for Google reviews?
Yes, in most states you can ask. Ask every client in the same way, offer nothing in return, and ask them to leave out private details of the case. The FTC bans incentives for positive reviews, and ABA Model Rule 7.2 limits giving anything of value for a recommendation. Check your own state bar rules too, because some states add their own limits on testimonials.
How should I reply to a bad review?
Keep the reply short and neutral, and do not mention any fact about the case. ABA Formal Opinion 496 says a negative online review alone does not allow a lawyer to reveal client information. You can say your professional rules prevent you from discussing the matter and invite the person to call. Many lawyers decide not to reply at all to reviews that are clearly false.
Can I say I specialize in a practice area?
Be careful with that word. ABA Model Rule 7.2(c) says a lawyer may not state or imply certification as a specialist unless an approved organization certified them and the communication names that organization. Phrases like "my practice focuses on estate planning" describe your work without implying a certification. Your state version of the rule controls, so check it before you publish.
Do I need a blog for my law firm?
You need answers to the questions clients search before they hire, and a blog is one place to put them. People search "how much does a lawyer cost" 4,400 times a month and "lawyer vs attorney" 14,800 times. One useful post a week on cost, timelines and process will do more than daily news posts. Never write about a client matter without the client's informed consent.
Why was my law firm's Google profile suspended?
Google rarely gives details, and lawyers often see the word "deceptive." Common causes are a virtual office address, a coworking desk without signage or staff, extra keywords in the business name, and duplicate profiles for one lawyer. Fix the cause first, then file an appeal with proof such as a lease, a photo of your sign and your bar license.
