The short version
- The first job is your Google Business Profile, under the exact name on your USDOT registration, with your real staffed address and the cities you serve as your service area.
- People who hire movers are afraid of scams, so show your USDOT number, a real local address, photos of your own branded trucks and a clear way to get an in-home or video estimate.
- Interstate movers must show "U.S. DOT No." and their number in every ad, including the website, and must link to the FMCSA booklet "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move".
- Ask every customer for a Google review the day the truck is unloaded, because most people only trust reviews from the last three months.
- Share of people in the US who moved to a different home in 2024, and about three of every four of them stayed in the same state.
- 11.8%
- U.S. Census Bureau
- Share of consumers who look for reviews written in the last three months, so reviews from last year carry less weight.
- 74%
- BrightLocal
- Share of consumers who used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before.

Your next tasks
1
Fix your Google Business Profile
Your profile decides whether you show in the map results for "moving companies near me", the largest search in this trade. Google suspends profiles with keyword-stuffed names or fake addresses, and moving is a trade where that is common.
Start here: Go to business.google.com and open your profile. Estimated time: 30 min.
2
Put your USDOT number and FMCSA booklet link on your site
Federal rules require interstate movers to show their USDOT number in every advertisement, and the FMCSA tells customers that a website with no address or registration details is a red flag.
Start here: Add "U.S. DOT No." followed by your number to your website footer. FMCSA rules require this exact form in every ad. Estimated time: 30 min.
3
Ask last month's customers for a Google review
Most consumers look for reviews from the last three months, and moving demand swings by season. A steady flow of new reviews keeps your profile current when people compare movers.
Start here: In your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Get more reviews, and copy the review link. Estimated time: 30 min.
Your personalized template
Paste into the description field of your Google Business Profile. Do not add links, prices or sale offers, which Google does not allow there. Fill the bracketed details with your own facts.

What the search data tells moving companies
Aranx compared this page's 13 selected searches. Use the counts to compare customer needs, then choose a topic that fits what you offer. National counts do not tell you how many customers you can reach in your own service area.
Compare searches from people ready to act
- moving companies near me
- 301,000
- local moving companies
- 60,500
- long distance moving companies
- 22,200
These are the largest reported action searches in this sample, measured as average monthly US searches. A larger count does not mean a page is easier to rank. Match the page to the customer's actual question and your ability to help.
Use seasonality to decide when to prepare
For "moving companies near me", September 2025 had 368,000 searches. November 2025 had 135,000. The peak was 2.7 times the low. Compare this pattern with your own season and customer history before scheduling content.
Sources, method and limits
Prepared by Aranx. Search source: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO, United States, August 2026. We rechecked all 416 distinct customer queries across the 30 playbooks on October 13, 2026. Location: United States. Language: English. Search partners are excluded.
This is an editorial sample, not a complete list or a survey of businesses. Google Ads counts are approximate and can group similar phrases. Ad prices vary by place, time and advertiser. They do not measure organic ranking difficulty or expected revenue.
The seasonal comparison divides the highest monthly count by the lowest in the series. The action-search comparison sorts the reported average monthly counts for searches labeled ready to act. These are Aranx calculations, not customer results.

Measure booked jobs over 90 days
Download the results worksheet from the planner. Record your baseline before changing anything. Track website search clicks, inquiries and booked jobs in separate columns.
Use Search Console for website search clicks. Record the source people report and the outcome you can confirm. A click count alone does not show whether more people chose your business.
Note changes to pages, ads, pricing, availability and seasonality. Review the pattern after 90 days and choose your next task. Keep customer names and contact details out of the worksheet.

Fix your Google Business Profile
30 min
Your profile decides whether you show in the map results for "moving companies near me", the largest search in this trade. Google suspends profiles with keyword-stuffed names or fake addresses, and moving is a trade where that is common.
- Go to business.google.com and open your profile.
- Write your business name exactly as it appears on your USDOT registration and your trucks. Remove words like "Best Cheap Movers" if they are not part of your real name.
- Select Edit profile, then Location, and check that the address is a real office or warehouse with staff during business hours. Google does not allow virtual offices or mailboxes.
- Next to Service area, select Edit and add the cities or ZIP codes you serve, up to 20, within about 2 hours of driving from your base.
- If you also run storage, set your hours to your office hours, which is what Google asks storage businesses to use.
Put your USDOT number and FMCSA booklet link on your site
30 min
Federal rules require interstate movers to show their USDOT number in every advertisement, and the FMCSA tells customers that a website with no address or registration details is a red flag.
- Add "U.S. DOT No." followed by your number to your website footer. FMCSA rules require this exact form in every ad.
- Add your business address, MC number if you have one, and a line about your insurance near the footer.
- Add a link to the FMCSA page for "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" on your quote page.
- If you are a broker and not a carrier, say so plainly on your homepage, as FMCSA rules for brokers require.
- If you only move within your state, check your state transportation agency for its own license number and advertising rules.
Ask last month's customers for a Google review
30 min
Most consumers look for reviews from the last three months, and moving demand swings by season. A steady flow of new reviews keeps your profile current when people compare movers.
- In your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Get more reviews, and copy the review link.
- Text the link to every customer you moved in the last 30 days, using the review request template on this page.
- Make it part of the crew lead's checklist to tell the customer a text is coming, after the last box is in the house.
- Ask every customer the same way. Do not offer discounts for reviews and do not screen out unhappy customers first.
Upload photos of your real trucks and crews
45 min
The FMCSA warns customers about movers who show up in rental trucks. Photos of your own branded trucks, crews in uniform and your warehouse show you are the company that will actually do the move.
- Take photos of each truck with your name and USDOT number visible on the side.
- Take photos of a crew wrapping furniture, loading a truck and carrying a piano or a safe if you move them.
- Take a photo of your office or warehouse front with the sign visible.
- Upload 15 to 20 of these to your Google Business Profile and use the same photos on your website, in place of stock photos.
Answer the phone with your company name and make quotes easy
30 min
FMCSA lists a phone answered with "Movers" instead of a company name as a scam warning sign. Callers who reach you from Google judge you in the first ten seconds.
- Tell everyone who answers your phone to say the company name first.
- Put a short quote form on your homepage that asks for move date, from and to ZIP codes, home size and special items.
- Offer an in-home or video walk-through for every estimate, and say so on the quote page.
- Check that your phone number is tappable on a phone and that calls after hours reach a person or a clear voicemail.
Your 90-day SEO plan for moving companies
After the first week, work through one phase at a time. Most businesses see their Google Business Profile move first and their website pages later.
Weeks 1 to 2
Get found and look trustworthy
Show up correctly in Google Maps and answer the scam worries people bring to every moving search.
- Finish the five first-week tasks above.
- Add services to your Business Profile, such as local moving, long-distance moving, packing, piano moving and storage.
- Write an "About us" page with the owner's name, years in business, number of trucks and a photo of the team.
- Set up Google Search Console for your website so you can see which searches bring visitors.
- Write down where your last 30 booked moves came from so you can compare later.
Weeks 3 to 4
Build pages for each type of move
Give each move type its own page so Google can match it to searches like "apartment movers" or "piano movers near me".
- Write separate pages for local moves, long-distance moves, apartment moves, packing, and specialty items like pianos.
- On each page, show a real price range from your last 20 moves of that type and explain what changes the price.
- Explain your estimate types in plain words, and whether a quote is binding or can change on moving day.
- Add photos and 2 or 3 reviews that mention that move type.
- Link each page from your homepage and your Business Profile services.
Month 2
Answer the questions people search before a move
Reach people while they plan, with answers that show you know local moving conditions.
- Write a moving cost guide for {city} using your own job data, such as average price for a two-bedroom apartment.
- Publish a printable moving checklist with your name and phone number on it.
- Write a post on how much to tip movers, with a plain answer and no pressure.
- Write city pages only for the cities where you do the most moves, with real jobs, parking rules and building access tips for each.
- Text a review request to every customer on moving day.
Month 3
Build local partners and measure
Get referrals and links from businesses that see people right before they move.
- Ask real estate agents, apartment managers and senior living communities to list you as a moving resource on their sites.
- Offer apartment complexes a one-page move-in and move-out guide with their building rules and your contact details.
- Check Google Search Console for searches where you show up but rarely get clicks, and rewrite those page titles.
- Compare where this month's booked moves came from with the list you made in week one.
- Before your busiest months, add new photos and a Google post about how far ahead customers should book.

See how Aranx worksHow to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers
People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers questions like "how much does a two-bedroom move cost in my city" or "which local movers are reliable". BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 45% of consumers used AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before.
These tools build their answers from pages they can read. A quote page with a real price range, your USDOT number, your estimate types and the cities you serve gives them facts to repeat. A homepage with only "Call for a free quote" gives them nothing.
Keep your business name, phone number and address the same on Google, Yelp, the BBB, Angi and your FMCSA registration. Reviews that name the move type and the neighborhood, such as "they moved our piano up three flights in Midtown", give both people and AI tools specific proof.
Listings and directories to consider
Customers find you on these sites, and Google checks them to confirm your business details. Use the same name, address and phone number on every one.

5 SEO mistakes moving companies make
Keywords in your Google business name
Names like "Best Cheap Movers {city}" break Google's rules and can get your profile suspended. Use the name on your registration and trucks.
Fake offices in every city you serve
Google allows a profile only for a real location with staff, not a virtual office or mailbox. List the cities you serve in your service area instead.
No USDOT number on the website
FMCSA rules require interstate movers to show "U.S. DOT No." and the number in every ad, and customers treat a missing number as a scam sign. Put it in your footer.
Estimates over the phone with no walk-through
FMCSA warns customers about estimates given sight unseen. Offer an in-home or video walk-through and say so on your quote page.
Old reviews and no new ones
Most consumers look for reviews from the last three months. Make the review text part of every moving day, all year.
Questions moving companies ask about SEO
How long does SEO take for a moving company?
Fixes to your Google Business Profile and new reviews can change your map results within a few weeks. New service pages and cost guides usually take three to six months to bring steady traffic. Moving demand also rises and falls through the year, so start before your busy months and track where each booked move came from over a full year.
Should I pay for Google Ads or work on SEO?
Ads bring calls the day they start and stop when you stop paying. In the Google Ads data on this page, a click on "long distance moving companies" costs $80.14 on average and "moving companies near me" costs $24.75. SEO takes months but has no cost per click. Many movers run ads for long-distance work and build pages and reviews for local moves.
Do I really need my USDOT number on my website?
If you move household goods across state lines, yes. FMCSA rules require your name and "U.S. DOT No." with your number in every advertisement, and require a link to the "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" booklet on your website. Brokers have extra rules, including stating that they are a broker. Local-only movers should check their state agency, which may have its own number to display.
Can I make a Google profile for each city I serve?
Only if you have a real, staffed office or warehouse in that city. Google allows one profile per location, and virtual offices, mailboxes and co-working desks without staff and signage are not eligible. Google can suspend profiles at fake addresses. List up to 20 cities in the service area of your real location instead.
Are moving lead sites worth paying for?
Shared leads from lead sites are often sold to several movers, so you compete on price and speed. A claimed, complete profile on review sites still helps because people read reviews there. Many movers put most of their budget into their own Google profile and website, where every lead comes only to them.
Do I need a blog?
You need pages that answer what people search before a move, such as what movers cost, how much to tip and how far ahead to book. Those questions get thousands of searches a month in the data on this page. Two useful posts a month that use your own prices and local building rules do more than weekly generic moving tips.
How should I handle a damage claim in a public review?
Reply in public within a day or two, stay calm and do not discuss the claim amount, inventory or the customer's address. Say that you will handle it directly and give a phone number. Then follow your normal claims process. People reading the review care more about how you respond than about the problem itself.
